Help finding better rates for a one way rental car.
Linda asks:
re: cheaper rates for a one way rental car
I live on the West Coast. I'm thinking of going to the East Coast this summer to visit a few friends. They are spread over several states.
I'd be landing in Boston, staying in the area for a couple of days and then visiting friends in other states & departing from Baltimore. The total is about 9 days. I tried looking at rates for a one-way rental for the 9 days. I also tried looking at renting in the Boston area for 4 days & then renting another car for the rest of the trip and that actually ended up being more expensive. Do you have any suggestions for cutting costs?
My Response:
I really wish I had another suggestion.... You state that as well as checking the rates for a one way rental car for the nine days you "also tried looking at renting in the Boston area for 4 days & then renting another car for the rest of the trip." ... That would have been my suggestion for cheaper rates for a one way rental car.
I'm afraid I can't think of anything else that might help, other than the standard --check multiple companies, check with
discount codes to find the cheapest oneway car rental --all of which I'm sure you already have done.
Sorry that I can't help you find better rates for your oneway rental, but I do appreciate your question.
Linda replied:
Ok - The trip will be in August but I will probably make my airline reservation in January so I would be able to reserve the car at any time between January and July. Are there any months that are more likely to have good specials?
My Response:
It's so hard to guess when the car rental companies will have specials... it can vary so much depending on the company and city. Also there are rarely ever special rates for a one way rental car.
If I were you, I would book it in January. Then continue to check back every 3 to 4 weeks to see if that rate has gone down. With most car rental company websites you can modify your reservation to reflect the new rate... a tip is to change your pickup or return time slightly (still keeping the rental within the same number of days) and rebook.... if that doesn't automatically reduce the rate to the new rate, then just call the company toll free number and get a reservation agent to do it for you... if they can't manage it it their system, ask for a manager!
You can also continue to check other companies, if you have the time and are so inclined. If you find something cheaper with a different company, book it and go back and cancel your original oneway car rental reservation.
Hope this helps!
